Ilk Contradictions

Key Takeaways
- Ilk is a UK fragrance house founded by Annabella Fasano-Leslie and Holly Hutchinson, built around layerable unisex fragrances inspired by stories rooted in human nature.
- The fragrances are designed specifically to be worn together, each enhancing and subduing different facets of the other rather than functioning as standalone compositions.
- The entire production process is kept within 80 miles in the UK, with packaging handmade in Leicester using recycled Italian paper and artistic caps crafted by hand from eco jesmonite and resin.
- A portion of every sale goes toward planting trees in cities through Trees For Cities, and each box contains wildflower seed-infused postcards to plant at home.
- Founded by a Psychology major turned advertising creative and a fragrance industry veteran who has brought five perfume brands to market.
In niche perfumery, most brands ask you to find the one fragrance that represents you. Ilk asks a different question entirely. What if a single scent was never quite enough to capture who you actually are? Founded on the idea that human nature is layered, contradictory and always shifting, Ilk is a UK fragrance house built around compositions designed to be worn together, each one changing in the presence of the other to reflect something more complex and more honest than any single bottle could achieve alone.
The Founders Behind the Brand
Annabella Fasano-Leslie, Olfactive and Creative Director, has used scent as a medium for storytelling her entire life. The concept of Ilk took shape during her years studying Psychology, where she developed a deep interest in human nature, memory and identity. After eight years working with leading creative agencies to help global brands define themselves, she decided it was time to build something of her own. Holly Hutchinson, who joined as Managing Director, brought the operational expertise to make it real. With a history of bringing five perfume brands to market including her own, Memoize London, Holly's understanding of fragrance production and the customer experience gave the collaboration exactly what it needed. Together they set out to build a brand that celebrates the contradictions within us rather than asking us to resolve them.
Quality and Sustainability at the Core
Ilk uses only high quality ingredients, carefully selected for how they interact and layer rather than how they perform in isolation. The entire production and manufacturing process is kept within 80 miles in the UK, which allows close oversight of both quality and sustainability at every stage. This is not a brand that outsources the parts it finds inconvenient.
Packaging Built with Intention
The attention to craft extends through every physical element of the brand. Boxes are handmade in Leicester by artisans using recycled Italian paper, with each paper package carrying a carbon payback that contributes to the replanting and preservation of rainforest in Vietnam through the World Land Trust. The artistic caps on each bottle are handmade by artist Daniele Rubino using eco jesmonite and resin with unique elements including dried dandelion seeds and metal offcuts. They are designed to have a second life as mini plant vases or paperweights rather than simply becoming packaging waste. Each box also contains a limited run A5 print from Joe Horner, a British National Portrait winner featured in Elle and Vogue.
Nature, Charity and a Deeper Connection
Inside every Ilk box you will find wildflower seed-infused postcards designed to be planted rather than discarded. A portion of every sale, not just profits, goes toward planting trees in cities through Trees For Cities via Workforgood, with impact extending both within the UK and internationally. For a brand built around human nature, the commitment to actual nature feels like a natural extension of the same thinking.
